Solar panel project to reduce energy consumption at the port and advance the company’s broader renewable energy efforts across ports and destinations worldwide.
MIAMI, FL / ACCESSWIRE / September 12, 2024 / Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE:CCL)(LSE:CCL)(NYSE:CUK), the world’s largest cruise line company, today announced that the installation of solar panels for two cruise terminals in the Port of Barcelona is underway. Solar panels mounted on the roof, a first for the port, are capable of providing more than 100% of the energy required for daily power supply, reducing overall electricity consumption.
Carnival Corporation and the Port of Barcelona partnered with a Catalonia-based solar supplier to install 1,350 panels on Palacruceros (Terminal D) and Helix Cruise Center (Terminal E), which will generate a total of 866,000 additional kilowatt hours (kWh). The year of work for the installation of solar panels began in July at Palacruceros, and the full project at both terminals is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
In addition, the excess energy produced by the solar panels, which is estimated at 32% for the Helix Cruise Center alone, can be directed to the local energy grid to improve the overall use of renewable energy generation in the port. In total, more than 245,000 kilowatt-hours of surplus electricity is fed into the grid each year – equivalent to the average annual consumption of 60 households.
The groundbreaking project builds on Carnival Corporation’s development of a new solar panel farm unveiled earlier this year at Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic, one of eight leading port destinations and exclusive islands owned and operated by the company. Together, these projects are the beginning of the company’s broader efforts to integrate renewable energy throughout its portfolio of ports and destinations.
“The shift to renewable energy is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize our environmental footprint in the beautiful destinations we visit,” said Karin Plettner Rutishauser, vice president of global port and destination strategy for Carnival Corporation. . “Partnering with the Port of Barcelona, the solar panels at our terminals will significantly contribute to the generation of clean energy, both for the local community and for our more than one million cruise guests who pass through this vibrant city each year. Josh enjoys, benefits.”
“Through this latest project with Carnival, we are establishing the foundation of our new energy model based on renewable energies, energy storage and a smart grid,” said Luis Salvado, President of the Port of Barcelona. He continued: “Sustainability has always been our main engine, and these efforts have proudly placed us at the forefront of creating environmental and economic prosperity in our port, city and region.”
As one of the most important commercial ports in the Mediterranean for more than 2000 years, the Port of Barcelona has long established the city as a leader for the future of environmental innovation. This includes the first cruise port in the Mediterranean with facilities to supply liquefied natural gas to cruise ships and the implementation of air quality improvement plans to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions from port activities.
Carnival Corporation and its eight cruise lines – AIDA Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn and P&O Cruises (UK) – visit Barcelona throughout the year, with all brands that They use the house in whole or in part. .
